How to create a Backyard Cabana Bar

It’s 5 O’Clock somewhere, time to head out to your backyard and whip up a cocktail or two?

Backyard Bars are quickly taking off as the newest (and coolest) trend in outdoor living.

Whether you make it a Personal Pub, your very own Sports Bar or a Flashy Cocktail Lounge, you’ve got the perfect space for happy hour, cocktail competitions or to watch the latest match. Family and Friends will be eager to join you (just try to stop them!).

So – how do you create your own backyard bar?

Here it is, in 5 easy steps.

1. Start with your building.

The first item you need is a building – ideally with a side entry door, and deck/verandah for shade, as well as a sliding window for serving.

Make sure your bar is secure (lockable) and watertight, to keep your bar supplies safe.

These buildings are the best you can buy, jus sayin’! 😉

2. Add a bench

This can be done fairly easily, as a DIY Project, or by your local handyman.

Simply attach a plank of wood to the front of your bar with some brackets, underneath your sliding window, and you’ve got a serving bench for all those special cocktails you surprise your friends with.

Tip: Make sure your bench is sturdy enough to take the weight of people leaning on it.

3. Add bar stools/seating

Once your bench is in, seek out some stylish stools to sit at your bar window.

Make sure you measure the stools before purchasing, as you want them to suit the height of your bench. If bar stools aren’t your cup of vodka, try adding some comfy ottomans instead.

4. Fit out the inside of your bar

Comfort, style and ambience are key factors to consider when fitting out the inside of your bar. First, make a quick list of what you’ll need to include in your space. Are you going for a basic serving area with storage cupboards, a fridge and a sink? Or, are going for a sleek cocktail lounge, where you might want to include some comfortable seating, elegant lighting, a metallic bar cart and plush cushions?

5. Add finishing touches

Now that your Bar is fitted out inside and out, its time to add the finishing touches. A few coats of paint are essential – choose your favorite colour, a colour that will blend with your garden, or use your house colours for a sleek, coordinated look. Add an Ice Bucket  for keeping drinks cool, and string up some lights to make evenings with friends just a little more magical.
