No road? No problem

Scotland Island, off Sydney’s Northern Beaches, is reached only by boat or barge, with steep bush blocks, unsealed tracks and no stores. So how do you build there? Meet three islanders, a boatbuilder, a family chasing sunshine, and a couple working from the woods, whose Melwoods were barged across the water as modular panels and built on site in places conventional construction couldn’t.

Many problems. One solution.

Jane and Richard faced a wall of constraints: a home on Sydney’s Upper North Shore they didn’t want to leave, a small sloping block that ruled out most backyard buildings, and Richard’s late international calls taking over the bedroom while the household tried to sleep. One Melwood Mod, on a forgotten corner of the garden, solved every one of these… and more.

Better out than up for this heritage home

His two daughters needed their own rooms, but Steve’s study was taking up the third bedroom. This heritage home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches had run out of space. Rather than the cost and red tape of building up, he looked out, adding a detached Melwood home office in the garden and giving the house its third bedroom back.

Every nook needs a cranny

With five people in a small Wollongong cottage, Jenny’s family needed flexible extra space, not another fixed room. Their Melwood Porch, The Cranny, is a study, craft centre, music lounge, guest room and teen hangout space in one, thriftly furnished start to finish on a Facebook Marketplace budget.

Separating study from sleep

Vidthiya wanted her 14-year-old son to have somewhere to study away from his bedroom, so schoolwork and sleep each had their own space. This inner-west Sydney Melwood Mod 21 is his dedicated study room and retreat, with its own bathroom, and a space to grow into for years to come.

Don’t close the door on your garden this winter

A Melwood garden room is built for year-round use, from quality materials with a Colorbond® roof and a choice of single or double glazing. Add insulation and heating to suit, and it stays comfortable right through winter.

Extra space for generations

When Ian’s daughter and her three teenage children moved back home, life became a lot busier and the house became a lot fuller. Maintaining harmony between three generations living under one roof isn’t always easy. For this family, relief came in the form of a Melwood Verandah, which created the breathing room everyone needed. “With […]

Years in the planning. Two days to install.

It was always Nina’s plan. To transform that empty patch of grass at the top of the garden into a usable outdoor space – a retreat for the teens and a home office for the parents. She just needed to wait to make it happen. But when it did, it happened fast. “It’s a great […]

A teen retreat and a dream home complete

When you find your dream home, sometimes it’s just one detail away from perfect.  That’s what Lisa’s family discovered during their recent house hunt. While the property they fell in love with ticked nearly every box, there was one crucial element missing; space for their teenage son to call his own.   But space doesn’t need […]

The shed upgrade game-changer

What if you could transform a dull old space into stylish storage, an inspiring home office, or a vibrant hangout space for the kids and their friends. What if you could add visual appeal to the backyard and increase property value?
Better still, what if you could achieve all of the above?
