A stunning all-black aesthetic. Striking architectural details. And the most beautiful bathroom.
Their family was expanding. So, Caitlin and Joseph needed to expand their living space accordingly. But for this couple, it wasn’t just about creating extra space. It was about creating something bold, beautiful and truly unique.
“It’s been so nice to finally have several friends and family stay over comfortably since the build was completed.”

Not the average backyard building
Not everyone approaches a garden building as a design project. But because every one of our buildings is designed with and for its owners – customised to suit their individual needs, lifestyle and aesthetic preferences – Greenspan customers do.
Caitlin and Joseph embraced this design flexibility wholeheartedly. Because, for them, aesthetics mattered as much as practicality.
Their family was growing, and living in a small house in Sydney’s southern suburbs meant they were desperate for more space.
“Living in a two-bedroom semi with two small kids and one of us working from home, we felt we really needed the extra space for a home office and a guest room,” Caitlin tells us.
The need for additional room was unquestionable. But so was avoiding the cost, disruption and complexity of a traditional home extension.
“Since a traditional extension was out of our budget, a garden studio was the smartest way to gain those extra ‘zones’ without the cost and stress of a full renovation,” Caitlin explains.
But not a bland backyard room. Not a generic garden studio that looked like every other. Something with style. Something architectural. Something that would feel like a genuine extension of their home and personalities, while evolving alongside family life for years to come.
And, because they were juggling a very young family and a busy lifestyle, it was important that it was fuss-free.
“We loved the idea of the building being mostly constructed off-site to minimise disruption,” says Caitlin.
This is where Greenspan stepped in.
Easy by design
Greenspan’s PreCrafted system was a natural fit for a busy family that needed more space without any of the upheaval usually associated with getting it.
With the building prefabricated off-site and delivered ready to install, the disruption to daily life – and to the neighbours of a busy inner-city street – is minimal. No months of trades on site. No endless material deliveries clogging the street. No noise and dust while two small children try to sleep. Instead, it’s generally installed in a day and completed in weeks.
But off-site construction was only part of the appeal. The ability to customise – to have control over every decision from design, to materials, to finishes – was equally important to a couple who wanted something special.
“We were also drawn to Greenspan’s modern designs and the reputation they have for making the initial selection process very straightforward,” Caitlin confirms.
This process began like every other Greenspan customer’s. A video consultation with a Design Solutioneer to discuss ideas, priorities and possibilities in detail. Then a Display Centre visit, where they got a tangible feel for materials and styles, turning consideration into conviction… and a building design.
“The process was quite direct,” Caitlin recalls. “We sat down with John, who gave us plenty of great advice and mocked up a 3D model of our building so we could see how it would look.”
And from there, it all began to take shape, falling beautifully – and boldly – into place.

Bold on the outside
A Workshed Studio 28 – spacious and airy at 3.8m x 7.2m with a pitched roof and cathedral ceiling – was the chosen canvas for the bold design direction that followed.
Because from the very beginning, this was always going to be a beautiful backyard studio.
Vertical Weathertex Weathergroove Smooth 150 cladding establishes the strong architectural lines of the exterior, while black aluminium 3-lite double doors with matching middle-awning windows bring striking architectural presence to the front elevation. Additional double-hung and sliding windows to the gable end and rear balance light, while Colorbond® roofing, gutters, flashings and downpipes in “Night Sky” complete the building.
With the cladding painted to blend with the windows and roofing, the result is a seamless all-black exterior. It’s bold, yet beautifully restrained – the dramatic palette softened by the warm tones of the timber deck and the lush tropical foliage that surrounds it.
And behind every design decision was one person.
“Caitlin was the designer of all of it,” Joseph says simply.
Beautiful on the inside
And this was the same for inside, where the boldness of the exterior gives way to something softer but just as considered.
The interior is warm and calm; gentle whites, honey-coloured timbers, earthy tones and textures. Luxurious curtains dress the windows, and soft lighting creates a cosy ambience in an otherwise serene and minimalist space, where the much-needed guest bed is the main focus.
The addition of internal walls has created a study nook for Joseph’s work-from-home space. And behind the door beside it, the standout feature of this beautiful building.
“The bathroom in there is way better than the bathroom we have in the house,” says Joseph.
He’s not wrong.
Rich olive-green tiling lines the walls from floor to ceiling, paired with larger beige floor tiles that extend up and behind the toilet and vanity to one side and the full-size bath to the other, adding depth and texture to the space. Touches of luxury run throughout – a stone vanity, brushed tapware, a rainfall shower and a frameless glass screen – all grounded by the earthy tones of the tiling, timber vanity, and carefully chosen accessories.
It’s bold, beautiful, and more boutique hotel than backyard studio.

Versatility in action
The building was installed in a day, and the finishing touches were completed within weeks. Since then, it has been in constant use, used daily as Joseph’s home office.
It also doubles as a self-contained guest suite – and with somewhere comfortable to stay, the visitors have followed.
“It’s very useful, it’s getting used by out-of-towners – family from Newcastle who come to stay,” Joseph tells us.
Adding a bath was a purposeful decision – and not just to provide their guests with a touch of luxury. With two small children, the evening bathing routine has become much easier.
“We decided to add a bathtub to the bathroom since we don’t have one in the main house, which has been great for the kids,” Caitlin explains.
But it’s the studio’s future that demonstrates its versatility.
“I can take my guitar out there and actually play guitar once in a while,” Joseph says. And, looking further ahead, “When the kids are older, I want to soundproof it and put a drum kit in there and start a family band,” he laughs.
A home for life
It’s already a building that’s working hard in both looks and function – but like Caitlin, Joseph and their two young children, it’s only just getting started.
Regardless of whether it’s still a guest space and home office in five years, a teen retreat in 10, or a creative hobby room in 15, one thing is for certain. Its versatility will allow it to evolve with this young family as their life and needs inevitably do, transforming a 2-bedroom inner-city semi into a home for life.
“Thank you so much, we are really happy with it,” Caitlin says.
And so are we.
It’s bold. It’s beautiful. And it’s built to be theirs.
