One of the most common questions we’re asked is “Do I need a concrete slab for my Garden Room?”.
The good news is, most Melwood Garden Rooms don’t require a concrete slab!
Unless you’re using the garden room for exceptionally heavy machinery or equipment, a raised timber floor is the recommended choice.
What is a Raised Timber Floor?
A raised timber floor is included free of charge in Melwood Garden Rooms, and suitable for most uses.
These floors are very sturdy, quick to install, treated against termite activity, and can be furnished just like the floors inside your house.
A raised timber floor is made up of a timber ‘grid’ frame, with a ply ‘subfloor’ attached on top, and it’s elevated on treated timber piers.
This flooring system is very similar to what is used in most homes and small buildings around Australia.
It is suitable for most garden room uses, and has a great load-bearing capacity.
With roughly 16 – 18 piers per garden room, the load is evenly distributed, creating a sturdy and durable floor.
Concrete Slab Q&A
Q | Do I have to have a slab for my Melwood Garden Room?
A | No. If you won’t be using extremely heavy machinery in the room, the raised timber floor will be fine.
Q | I already have a concrete slab in my backyard, can you install my Melwood Garden Room onto that?
A | Yes! As long as the slab is in good useable condition, we can install your garden room straight onto it.
Q | I have a concrete slab I need removed. Can you remove it for me?
A| No, we don’t remove existing slabs. Once you have got the slab removed, we can then install your garden room.
Q | Can you install my Garden Room on a paved area?
A | In most cases, yes! We will assess this when we meet with you at your home to discuss your order.
Q | My existing concrete slab is smaller than the garden room I want to put there. What can I do?
A | If your slab is smaller than your new garden room, we can attach part of the garden room to the slab, and install the remaining part using our pier flooring system.
There is an example of this in the below picture.
Q | There is a slight slope in my backyard. Am I able to get a Garden Room?
A | If your property is on a slight slope or incline, the timber flooring system is another advantage.
We adjust the piers to the correct height on your property, ensuring that you get a level building.
Q | I want to use my garden room as a Home Gym – will I need a concrete slab?
A | No. The timber floor system that comes with your Garden Room is sturdy enough to uphold the weight of your gym machines.
Q | I want to use my Garden Room as an Outdoor Laundry – will the timber floor hold my heavy laundry machines?
A | Yes! Melwood Garden Rooms make great outdoor laundries, and will hold the weight of tiles and laundry machines.
