Lake Oberon Estate’s 5-star Cedarspan quartet

In the heart of New South Wales’ picturesque central tablelands, Tony and Julie revitalised 20-acres of working farm into Lake Oberon Estate.

This luxury boutique destination is nestled on the shores of Lake Oberon, offering its guests memorable country accommodation, experiences and events.

And at its heart are the four cosy Cedarspans that made it all possible.

“I created my own custom design…I found Doug really helpful, we worked through it together.”

Lake Oberon Estate: The country retirement dream

When Tony decided to retire from running his own software company in 2017, he and his wife Julie decided to also retire from city life. 20 acres of family-owned working farm in the heart of the central tablelands of New South Wales was the change in pace they dreamed of.

And it sparked a retirement ‘hobby’ that would allow them to share their newfound way of life with others looking to escape the urban grind.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Oberon and with remarkable lake and country views, what was once farmland has blossomed into a luxury venue where visitors can reconnect with nature. Four charming Cedarspan cabins offer alpine chalet-style accommodation and the authentic country experience Tony and Julie dreamed of for their guests.

“They are all part of Lake Oberon Estate,” Tony explains, “It’s a venue for weddings and corporate events and group gatherings. We also have it as an option for people to hire each cabin out for a weekend away from the city”.

Vision meets versatility

The vision was for a collection of luxury cedar cabins that would seamlessly integrate with the breathtaking Oberon landscape. The perfect blend of country charm with all the comforts of home. A space where people could unwind, reconnect with nature, and experience a touch of luxury.

However, turning this into reality required more than just imagination. It needed a supplier who could provide high-quality, customisable structures that seamlessly blend with their surroundings and could be personalised to this vision. This is where Greenspan entered the picture.

With the classic charm Tony was seeking, Greenspan’s Cedarspan Loft barn caught his attention.

“I was going for the country look, and that’s why I ended up choosing a Cedarspan,” Tony tells us.

Working with an experienced company, personalising a design to his exact requirements, and all within the budget he had set, sealed the deal.

“I found Doug really helpful…we worked through it together,” he recalls. “I created my own custom design, working with Doug knowing what I could and couldn’t change. We made it fit my budget.” Tony continues.

An alpine aesthetic

Julie and Tony upgraded the cladding of their barns to Western Red Cedar weatherboard, resulting in their desired authentic alpine cabin aesthetic.

Classic verandahs front and rear enhance this look further and provide essential outdoor space for guests to immerse themselves in the sensational surroundings. “Manor Red” Colorbond® roofing complemented by “Monument” flashings, and aluminium doors and windows in “Black” complete the alpine chalet appeal.

Inside, each luxury cabin welcomes guests wishing to escape the rat race with a cosy, relaxed ambience. And, not one to fully commit to retirement, incredibly the fit out and finish of each was completed by Tony himself, he tells us.

Charm and comfort for every season

Every chalet has been thoughtfully and cleverly designed to maximise space and provide luxurious home comforts for multiple guests.

Each offers three bedrooms, an ensuite plus a shared bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a laundry. All of this is centred around a spacious central living area with areas for relaxing, dining and even working.

It is here the Cedarspan’s beautiful signature cathedral ceiling is on display. Timber balustraded lofts to each end providing a luxe country ranch vibe. The focal point of this charming space is the toasty wood heater, nestled against a stunning stone feature wall backdrop.

Classic timber panelled walls are painted white, with warm timber trims and floors, completing the modern-rustic chalet aesthetic. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the region or to unwind following a memorable event on the estate.

Recognising the varied climate of the Oberon region, each Cedarspan cabin has been built and finished with year-round comfort in mind. The cedar cladding not only provides the visual aesthetic of a traditional wood chalet, but serves as an exceptional inherent insulator.

In the winter months, snow is common. “We added more insulation,” Tony says, “so when you turn on that wood fire heater, the place heats up and stays warm.”

Not only are these unique chalets beautiful to look at but they are comfortable and cosy for guests through the changing seasons.

“They are all part of Lake Oberon Estate. It’s a venue for weddings and corporate events and group gatherings.”

Beyond the cabin walls

Lake Oberon Estate offers guests more than just a luxurious cabin experience.

“The majority of people who come here want to get away from Sydney, so they turn off their phones,” Tony observes. “They don’t want the wi-fi, and in some cases, they don’t even want the TV.”

And this desire for disconnection can absolutely be achieved. The property boasts over 120 acres of stunning landscapes, providing ample opportunities for exploration and relaxation. Guests can enjoy direct access to Lake Oberon, perfect for a refreshing swim or a peaceful kayak excursion.

The estate itself is a haven for nature lovers. Imagine waking up to breathtaking views, enjoying a leisurely barbecue on the spacious outdoor deck, or stargazing around a crackling campfire.

As the website describes, “Lake Oberon Estate is arguably the best location in Oberon and the perfect destination to simply escape from the city to the mountains for a relaxing weekend with family and friends.”

And, as Tony himself says, “When you’re up here and if you’ve got four cars in the heart of Oberon, that’s considered a traffic jam.'”

Absolute bliss!
