The Australian government’s $20,000 instant asset write-off for small businesses has been extended until 30 June 2026, providing a fantastic opportunity for business owners to invest in their home office or business premises setup.

So, what’s the story?

After being legislated for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 income years, the $20,000 instant asset write-off has now been extended again to cover the 2025-26 income year. The measure allows eligible small businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of qualifying assets costing less than $20,000, rather than depreciating the cost over several years.

The current threshold passed Parliament in December 2025 and applies to assets first used or installed ready for use during the 2025-26 income year. From 1 July 2026, the threshold is currently legislated to revert to $1,000, so there is a defined window to consider before year-end.

Under the current measure, small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $10 million can instantly write off multiple assets that are first used or installed ready for use between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026. Assets valued at $20,000 or more, which cannot be immediately deducted, can be placed into the small business simplified depreciation pool and depreciated at 15% in the first income year and 30% each year after that.

Put simply, small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $10 million can immediately deduct the full cost of every eligible asset costing less than $20,000.
