Cullenbone Cottage sits proudly on the grounds of Cullenbone Schoolhouse.
Renee and Anthony, the former property owners, originally purchased this Cedarspan cabin in 2017 to add to their historic riverfront site. With its timeless appeal, it blends seamlessly with the 160-year-old former schoolhouse it accompanies, defying the difference in age.
Today, it operates as a private farmstay cottage, owned and operated by Claudine and Alan.

“People love the height of it…
it’s booked out pretty much 3 months in advance.”

A Mudgee icon
Cullenbone Schoolhouse is an iconic Mudgee property, built circa 1860, rich in history, and set on the banks of the Cudgegong River. As its name suggests, the property operated as a school until 1963, when it was sold and thoughtfully renovated into a beautiful country residence.
Nestled within the picturesque Mudgee landscape, known for its rolling vineyards, olive groves, and rich agricultural heritage, this 30-acre property offers a truly iconic rural Australian backdrop. To echo John Williamson’s beloved song, it’s the quintessential home among the gum trees, complete with a sheep or two and a kangaroo quietly grazing in the paddocks.
So, when Renee and Anthony decided to add another building to their property, it needed to be done with utmost respect for its heritage and surroundings.
Then and now
Today, the building Renee and Anthony chose to add is known simply as a Cedarspan 3030 – a base design measuring 5.6m x 5.4m from which customers can personalise every detail to create a finish that is truly unique to them. From cladding materials to roof colours, window and door styles to their positions – plus optional add-ons such as porches, verandahs, and lofts – the same base design can take on countless finished looks.
It’s a highly flexible approach that ensures that every building is unique, every project reflects its owner, every structure perfectly integrates with its environment.
But back in 2017, ‘The Country Cottage’ was a ‘ready-to-go’ Cedarspan design – still personalisable, but beautifully curated with elements that instantly delivered traditional Australian country homestead appeal.
And for this traditional Australian country setting, it was the perfect choice.
Quintessentially Australia
Originally built to be lived in, the cottage enjoys possibly the best position on the entire property. Set high on the banks of the river, breathtaking views stretch across the water to the back paddocks of neighbouring Gooree Park, and the wildlife, horses and cattle that call the hillside home.
Its cedar weatherboard cladding and handcrafted colonial cedar windows speak authentically of early settled Australia; the custom Zincalume roof adding to the olde-world charm. A ‘verandah out the front’ was, of course, a country cottage necessity, and spanning 1.9m x 5.4m, it offers plenty of room for the essential rocking chair.
As intended, the addition looks completely at home in its historic countryside setting – like it’s always been there and not a beat out of place.

Pet-friendly farm stay accommodation
Maintaining its timeless charm, today Cullenbone Cottage is a character-filled home away from home and a highly rated Airbnb.
The interior is spacious, bright and airy, with high cathedral ceilings and 2.4m walls all painted a crisp white. Striking the right balance between modern and traditional, the cedar windows and timber flooring provide warm accents. Earthy tones and textures within the furnishings and décor complete the inviting country atmosphere.
With one bedroom, a modern but heritage-style bathroom, a spacious lounge area, a kitchenette, and even a loft, it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. And as dog-friendly accommodation, even friends of the four-legged variety can spend summer days splashing in the river or winter nights by the fire pit.
With the Mudgee wineries a short drive, 30 acres of farmland to explore and the historic Travelling Stock Route to Mudgee on the doorstep, there is plenty to experience and enjoy before heading back to the comfort of the cottage.
The next page in history
Renee and Anthony sold their Cullenbone property – cottage and all – to current owners, Claudine and Alan, some years ago. And the couple have proudly added a new era to the property’s timeline with both the Schoolhouse and the Cottage serving as Airbnb accommodation since.
Every Greenspan structure is built to last, and Cullenbone Cottage is no different. In another 160 years, perhaps another generation of the Greenspan family business will be writing this story – a Cedarspan forming part of the property’s ongoing history.
