While it’s common to contend for sufficient space to work from home, what about spaces that enable the creative process, such as a home art studio?
For Sydney based artist Nicola, having her own private space to think, reflect and create was vital, which is why she invested in a Melwood to use as an art studio.
Previously working from the dining table in her home, Nicola is now thrilled to no longer have to pack away her art supplies at the end of the day.
“I can leave it and shut the door – and it’s ready, waiting for me,” Nicola says. “I don’t know how I managed to do it before. Now I’m much more productive and can commit to more exhibitions.”
Nicola’s Mod Design 12 measures 3.2×3.6m in size, featuring double glass doors, board and batten cladding and Colorbond roof, gutters and downpipes in Woodland Grey. Externally finished with stained cedar, white window linings and the addition of decking, Nicola enjoys a dedicated home art studio space where she can not only paint but sit and think.
“It’s quite a personal space for me,” Nicola states. “It’s helpful having no distractions.”
Nicola draws inspiration from the surrounding bush landscape conveying themes of botanic Australia – drawing in crowds of art-lovers far and wide. Her paintings are inspired by neighbouring gardens, the roadside or local reserves, resulting in bold landscapes and outlines made from oil pastel paint.
Her commissioned artwork pieces include ‘Waratah’, ‘Autumn Roses’ and ‘Flowering Gum’, showcasing the bright, bold and beautiful hues of Australian nature.
With close ties to art galleries both local and Australia-wide, Nicola’s art proves popular at exhibitions such as the Michael Reid Northern Beaches art gallery in Newport.
“I have a solo exhibition coming up in November so that’s what I’m working on at the moment. I’m in the art studio every day working towards the exhibition with at least 15 pieces filling the gallery. It’s a lot of work.”
Sold out of art galleries and online, Nicola agrees that her art studio allows her to produce artworks from home without limitations.
“It’s good having the studio because it’s in the backyard. I’ve got three children at home but it doesn’t stop me from going in that studio to do a bit of work. Even though they’re here, I don’t have to go somewhere else to work, which is good.”
Finalist in several art awards such as the National Emerging Art Prize and the York Botanic Art Prize, Nicola has a distinct artistic talent recognised by many.
Previously bringing out a ‘100 Days of Oil Pastel’ solo exhibition involving 100 consecutive paintings, Nicola certainly has a peaceful environment in which to paint for days on end.
