The most versatile room in the house

Rachael’s home in Sydney’s Inner West was bursting at the seams. Juggling four boys, ongoing renovations, remote work and home workouts – all with just one shared living area – this family needed extra space…and fast!

A Melwood Mod came to the rescue, fitting right in to ease all of these pressures…and more.

“We recommend it to everyone – it was super easy and we are very pleased we did it!”

A family of 6, but one space

Anyone who has raised kids knows they need room to move, play, and, as they get older, retreat. Imagine, then, four growing boys in a house with just one shared living area!

“We wanted some extra internal living space, as our current house only has 1 living space,” Rachael explains, “We have four boys so wanted another space for everyone to spread out a bit more.”

But there was more to consider.

The house had recently undergone major renovations – “…a painful process,” Rachael tells us – and there were more renos in the pipeline.

Not only did they need extra breathing room, but they needed a versatile space to ease the pressure of renovating.

And they needed it to be a fast and straightforward solution.

Pre-designed doesn’t mean predetermined

Having experienced one stressful renovation, Rachael knew exactly what she wanted this time.

“We liked the idea of something pre-designed, fast to install,” she says.

But pre-designed doesn’t have to mean cookie-cutter, and fast doesn’t have to mean a compromise on quality. That’s where Greenspan stepped in to the picture.

Because every Greenspan building is precision-designed and PreCrafted off-site, the process is refreshingly straightforward from start to finish, delivering the speed and simplicity that Rachael was looking for.

But unlike an online transaction with an inflexible, predetermined design, Greenspan buildings are fully customisable, so every one is still unique. What’s more, you’re dealing with real people, having real conversations, getting real expert guidance, and arriving at a real solution that’s tailored to you.

That’s followed by swift delivery, rapid installation, and the highest-quality end result.

For a family already stretched thin, managing four active boys and ongoing home improvements, this combination meant all the difference.

This time, the process wouldn’t be painful – it would be supported, easy, fast….and the end result would be 100% theirs.

Seeing is believing

She loved the idea. But Rachael wasn’t about to buy a building unseen off a website, and she wasn’t prepared to take chances on such an investment without some guidance.

She wanted to stand inside the buildings, experience the space, assess the quality, and talk to people who understood what she needed and how best to achieve it.

With Greenspan, that’s exactly what she got.

Just how straightforward and supported this whole process would be became evident when Rachael visited a Display Centre.

“The team at Greenspan were fantastic guiding us through the requirements and limitations of each design,” she recalls, “We found it extremely useful visiting the showroom to see the options, stand inside them and better visualise how it would work for us.”

Here, she could explore the many designs on display, discover the array of personalisation options available, and examine the quality in detail. And importantly, she could witness how they had stood up to years of exposure to extreme Australian weather, and assess their real-world durability.

And she could do all of this with a real person by her side. An experienced Design Solutioneer who asked the right questions, understood planning pathways, navigated any practical site limitations, and helped her to customise the design so it was uniquely hers.

For Rachael, this hands-on, personalised approach made all the difference. She wasn’t clicking through fixed options on a website, hoping for the best. She was making informed decisions with expert support, seeing the quality with her own eyes, and creating a design tailored specifically to her preferences.

She knew she was in the right hands – free from guesswork and supported every step of the way.

Custom-designed for a perfect fit

She chose the ever-popular Melwood Mod, available from as compact as 8m2 or as sizeable as 60m2. For Rachael, the ideal size was the Mod 13, measuring 3.8m x 3.6m, and slotting into her garden perfectly, positioned to appear to be an extension of the house.

Accompanying the signature Mod highlight windows, Rachael selected timber double doors, paired with double sidelight windows. This creates a frontage of glass that wraps around to full-length double hung windows on each side, allowing natural light to flood the interior and enabling views across the garden and pool.

On-site, horizontal custom cladding painted white was applied over the board and batten to ensure a perfect match with their adjacent house, and demonstrating the extent of the customisation that is possible with a Greenspan building. “Woodland Grey” Colorbond® roofing also blends seamlessly with their existing home.

It’s a crisp, fresh aesthetic that flows beautifully, connecting home, Melwood and garden almost as one.

Bright home gym setup with treadmill, bike and wall TV

One room, many uses

Just one year later, the Melwood has already proven its worth to Rachael and her family in many ways.

Initially installed as a home office for her husband, it has already taken on a new identity since then.

Work from home has relocated into the garage, where further renovations are underway, requiring the home gym that occupied that space to temporarily move. The Melwood stepped up. Now housing a treadmill, training bike, and weights set up, the daily exercise routine can continue uninterrupted, and there’s a second quiet space for anyone in the family to escape to if needed.

That’s somewhat of an essential in a house full of energetic boys!

So, its purpose continues to evolve.

“We aim to transform it into a living area once we have moved our gym space back into the garage,” explains Rachael.

Once the garage renovation is complete and the gym equipment returns to its permanent home, the Mod will transform again. This time into the second living space the family desperately needed from the start. A place where the boys can hang out, watch TV, or play games. A moment of peace for the parents away from the household chaos. Plus, it’s perfectly positioned to double as a pool cabana, offering shade, convenience and a comfortable spot to relax between swims.

Three distinct uses already. One versatile building. And endless future possibilities as the family’s needs continue to evolve over the years ahead.

Extra space, less stress

This Melwood’s adaptability is certainly invaluable for a growing family. But what has also proven to be priceless is how it has eased the renovation stress.

Absorbing the displacement of the bulky gym equipment, which otherwise would have consumed already scarce real estate inside the house, it has allowed life to continue as usual. And it will evolve effortlessly in the future once renovations are complete.

But unlike adding a room to the main house – which would have risked being another “painful process” of significant expense, months of construction, and further disruption to an already stretched family – the Melwood was refreshingly different. Fast, straightforward, and completely stress-free. The opposite of painful, relieving the pressure on the household during a time of space struggles.

“The studio has been a terrific addition for us,” Rachael concludes, “It’s wonderful…looks phenomenal…”

And most importantly, it’s not just another room; it’s the most versatile room in the house.
